Place value up to a million
Prompt PPJ-MTH-01500
🦉 Learn it
Every digit in a number has a place, and the place tells you what the digit is worth. Going from the right, the places are ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousands and hundred thousands.
Look at 754,301. The 7 is in the hundred thousands place, so it is worth 700,000. The 5 is worth 50,000 and the 4 is worth 4,000.
The 3 is worth 300, the 0 tells us there are no tens, and the 1 is worth 1. A zero is important: it keeps the other digits in their right places.
The school cooperative
Ada's school cooperative saved ₦754,301. That is ₦700,000 + ₦50,000 + ₦4,000 + ₦300 + ₦0 + ₦1. Each digit tells us how many hundred thousands, ten thousands, thousands, hundreds, tens and ones of naira there are.
