What AI Actually Is
No consciousness, no understanding, no feelings: just pattern-matching at scale.
You've probably heard people talking about AI as if it's some kind of magic. It's not. AI (artificial intelligence) is software that processes data to find patterns and make predictions. That's it. No consciousness, no understanding, no feelings.
When you use ChatGPT, Copilot, or Gemini, you're interacting with a large language model (LLM). It was trained by reading billions of words from the internet, books, and articles. It learned patterns in how humans use language, and now it predicts the most likely next word in a sentence, over and over. That's how it generates responses.
๐ก Key Insight
AI doesn't understand what it's saying. It produces text that sounds confident and knowledgeable, but it's essentially a very sophisticated autocomplete. It has no idea whether what it's saying is true.
You also interact with AI every day without realising it: the algorithm deciding what appears on your TikTok, Instagram, or YouTube feed is AI too, designed to keep you engaged.
